Objective

Our aim was to map the in vivo human functional connectivity of several brainstem nuclei with the rest of the brain by using seed-based correlation of ultra-high magnetic field functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data.

Materials and methods

We used the recently developed template of 11 brainstem nuclei derived from multi-contrast structural MRI at 7 Tesla as seed regions to determine their connectivity to the rest of the brain. To achieve this, we used the increased contrast-to-noise ratio of 7-Tesla fMRI compared with 3 Tesla and time-efficient simultaneous multi-slice imaging to cover the brain with high spatial resolution (1.1-mm isotropic nominal resolution) while maintaining a short repetition time (2.5 s).

Results

The delineated Pearson’s correlation-based functional connectivity diagrams (connectomes) of 11 brainstem nuclei of the ascending arousal, motor, and autonomic systems from 12 controls are presented and discussed in the context of existing histology and animal work.

Conclusion

Considering that the investigated brainstem nuclei play a crucial role in several vital functions, the delineated preliminary connectomes might prove useful for future in vivo research and clinical studies of human brainstem function and pathology, including disorders of consciousness, sleep disorders, autonomic disorders, Parkinson’s disease, and other motor disorders.

L. monocytogenes represents a primary concern in the production of Gorgonzola, a Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) Italian blue-veined cheese produced only in the Piedmont and Lombardy regions. L. monocytogenes isolates (N=95) obtained from Gorgonzola rinds, paste, and production/ripening environments were serotyped and then genotyped using Pulsed Field Gel Electrophoresis (PFGE). The goal of this study was to investigate the variability of L. monocytogenes PFGE-types across different PDO Gorgonzola manufacturers (N=22). The majority of the strains (88%) were serotyped as 1/2a. PFGE identified 2 major pulse-types grouping 62 strains, detected from different plants and years, suggesting the presence of persistent and niche-adapted L. monocytogenes. In 9 plants, environmental strains shared the same pulse-types with strains from rinds or paste, suggesting a possible transmission pathway. Encouragingly, L. monocytogenes was retrieved from only 1 paste, indicating that production processes were under control in 21 plants. In the remaining plant, un-effective pasteurization or cross-contamination during production processes could be the cause of the contamination. Consequently, it is imperative that producers operate under the total respect of the Good Manufacturing Practices and following the principles of the Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point plans, in order to contain contamination throughout the whole processing.  相似文献

The thermal performances of nanocomposite layers formed by Single-walled Carbon Nanotubes (SWCNT) dispersed in 2 different kind of polydimethyl-siloxane (PDMSO) matrices has been investigated by measuring the thermal resistance under conditions similar to the ones used for thermal management in microelectronics. A series of nanocomposite samples with thickness in the range 25 microm(-1) cm have been tested. The nanocomposites were prepared varying the amounts of nanotubes embedded in the matrix (from 0.1 to 5%w). In some cases also microsized graphites were mixed to the nanotube's fillers. For 25 micron thick layers, the thermal resistance of the neat silicone specimen can be reduced of 54% with the addition of 2%w carbon nanotubes. The variation of thermal conductivity as a function of the SWCNT's loading is reported and discussed. Furthermore the dispersion's effects of the nanotubes in the layers and the effects on the realization of a net-like system have been investigated.  相似文献

This study documents the defensive function of flavored humor secreted by the abdominal glands of Carabus lefebvrei pupae. The morphology and the ultrastructure of these glands were described and the volatile compounds of glands secretion were identified by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. The ultrastructure analysis shows an acinose complex formed by about 50 clusters. Each cluster has 20 glandular units and the unit—composed of one secretory and one canal cell lying along a duct—belongs to the class 3 cell type of Quennedey (1998). In the cytoplasm, the secretory cell contains abundant rough endoplasmatic reticula, glycogen granules, numerous mitochondria, and many well-developed Golgi complexes producing electron-dense secretory granules. Mitochondria are large, elongated, and often adjoining electronlucent vesicles. The kind and the origin of secretory granules varying in size and density were discussed. The chemical analysis of the gland secretion revealed the presence of a mixture of low molecular weight terpenes, ketones, aldehydes, alcohols, esters, and carboxylic acids. Monoterpenes, especially linalool, were the major products. We supposed that ketones, aldehydes, alcohols, esters, and carboxylic acids have a deterrent function against the predators and monoterpenes provide a prophylaxis function against pathogens. Microsc. We present state-of-the-art numerical simulations of a two-dimensional Rayleigh-Taylor instability for a compressible stratified fluid. We describe the computational algorithm and its implementation on the QPACE supercomputer. High resolution enables the statistical properties of the evolving interface that we characterize in terms of its fractal dimension to be studied.  相似文献

A continuous-time (RC)n lowpass filter is presented that can be fully integrated with cutoff frequency down to the 0.1 MHz range. The circuit is based on a cascade of new compact RC-cells that provides current amplification and filtering with minimum power dissipation (<15 μW/pole) using a single supply voltage (2 V). The high value resistance of the RC-cell is obtained by means of a current conveyor feedback that de-magnifies the signal current flowing in a small physical resistor. The dynamics of a population expanding into unoccupied habitat has been primarily studied for situations in which growth and dispersal parameters are uniform in space or vary in one dimension. Here, we study the influence of finite-sized individual inhomogeneities and their collective effect on front speed if randomly placed in a two-dimensional habitat. We use an individual-based model to investigate the front dynamics for a region in which dispersal or growth of individuals is reduced to zero (obstacles) or increased above the background (hotspots), respectively. In a regime where front dynamics is determined by a local front speed only, a principle of least time can be employed to predict front speed and shape. The resulting analytical solutions motivate an event-based algorithm illustrating the effects of several obstacles or hotspots. We finally apply the principle of least time to large heterogeneous environments by solving the Eikonal equation numerically. Obstacles lead to a slow-down that is dominated by the number density and width of obstacles, but not by their precise shape. Hotspots result in a speed-up, which we characterize as function of hotspot strength and density. Our findings emphasize the importance of taking the dimensionality of the environment into account.  相似文献

The thermal decomposition of 2-nitrobenzoic acid is investigated by means of adiabatic and quasi-isothermal calorimetry. The decomposition process develops according to zero order kinetics which gives substantial support to the intervention of vapour-phase reaction. The apparent activation energy of 144·8 kJ mol−1 is evaluated. Chemical analysis gives support to the proposal of reliable reaction mechanisms. © 1997 SCI.  相似文献
